Loyle Carner – ‘A Little Late’ EP

Monday night I went to Loyle Carner’s EP launch at Birthdays (Dalston) and it absolutely blew me away. Though he politely apologised for his nerves at the start of the gig – this was his first headliner – he needn’t have done. Slick, smooth, and inspiring throughout.

I spoke to Loyle on twitter last December and he assured me that just after Christmas there would be new tracks. 8 months later, and available for free download here, his aptly named EP ‘A Little Late’ has now dropped and is fantastic.

Thoughtful and melodic, Carner’s rhymes take us on a journey of love, life and loss. His real talent lies in his excellent delivery – spoken word, repetition, and a hazy and refreshing South London sound. At a time when people are scrutinizing UK hip-hop ‘A Little Late’ has dropped an atom bomb on the scene.

Rebel Kleff is the production force behind most of Loyle’s tracks and it turns out he’s also pretty good. His collab with Carner on ‘The Money’ is all about ‘making money for my fam’ and for me, comes a strong second after ‘Cantona’, even though choosing a favourite isn’t really possible.

Both ‘BFG’ and ‘Cantona’ are stories about Loyle’s late father who is the driving emotive force behind a lot of what he does. At his EP launch he even wore his father’s Man U shirt. But it is in such tracks that his charisma and intricacy vow to overpower any overwhelming feeling of sadness for the listener. Instead, they remain engaging and fun; he’s creating nothing short of masterpieces.

But what really struck me on seeing Loyle Carner was his sweet, humble demeanour. I wasn’t alone in feeling inspired by his incredible yet very human performance. He mentioned that he and his dad always dreamt of sharing a stage together; and I have absolutely no doubt that they will share many, many more.

Huge shout out to Loyle Carner, remember the name.

Abhi//Dijon – Abhi//Dijon EP // Free Download

Abhi Raju and Dijon Duenas have been creating quite a stir on the net since putting out the R&B influenced track “Twelve” on SoundCloud at the beginning of 2014. The duo then created a follow-up track which was equally as impressive in its arrangement, entitled “Let You Know”. The two tracks affirmed that the singer/producer duo were ones to watch due to the effortless level of quality they exuded.

A few months on and Abhi and Dijon are back with new material, this time with their highly anticipated 4-track self-titled EP. The EP demonstrates the pairs ability to continually create an organic and refined sound. The soft, heart-felt vocals immersed within the warped production results in a refreshing R&B sound, one which I and no doubt many R&B enthusiasts have been craving to hear for a while now. The best part about this is that the entire EP is available as a free download. Relax and rewind as you stream it below, and after you are done, go get your copy here.

JP Cooper Live @ Oslo, Hackney

JP Cooper, aka The Most Humble Guy In The Music Business Right Now treated fans to a headline gig at the Oslo, Hackney last night. It’s not often you can get fully blown away by a gig, but this was certainly an exception.

Funnily enough, the last time I was this blown away was watching label mate and support act, Nick Brewer play for his EP launch a few weeks back.

Other support came from Affie Jam bringing her beautiful voice and songs to the sold out show.

Last night however, the spotlight was fully on JP, as he held the crowd captive with acoustic performances of songs from his previous EPs, as well as backed by his band for his new material from ‘Keep The Quiet Out’.

In a recent interview with MOBO, JP explained that he didn’t want to just be seen as an acoustic act, and his pure talent and musicality was demonstrated with his ability to mesmerise a crowd, armed solely with his guitar and incredible vocal control, before blowing them away with an up-beat soulful future-hit.

You can download the audio from that video, for free, here.

The EP is available to buy from iTunes
